Exchange Mailbox Size
Exchange, not unlike many IT systems, has the need to provide storage space to save associated files (mail, calendars, to do lists, etc.). Storage capacity comes with associated costs for hardware, software, and labor and therefore unlimited space is not an option. UConn must limit the mailbox size because storage capacity is a finite resource.
Exchange provides three limits that can be set. These limits apply to a whole information store and can be overridden on a per-customer basis. The three limits are:
- Warning. The mailbox size at which users start to receive warning messages.
- Prohibit Send. Once users reach this limit, they are prevented from sending new mail.
- Prohibit Receive. Once users reach this limit, they are prevented from receiving new mail. The value has been set high, but is necessary to protect against situations where messages bouncing between Exchange and a foreign mail system cause runaway store growth.
- Student employees receive a 20MB mailbox:
- Warning: 15 MB
- Prohibit Send: 20 MB
- Prohibit Receive: 40 MB
- "Standard" customers, which are the majority, receive a 75MB mailbox (this also includes affiliates, vendors, consultants):
- Warning: 65 MB
- Prohibit Send: 75 MB
- Prohibit Receive: 150 MB
- Customers with greater email storage requirements, receive 150MB mailbox:
- Warning: 140 MB
- Prohibit Send: 150 MB
- Prohibit Receive: 250 MB
- Customers with even greater email storage requirements, receive 300MB mailbox:
- Warning: 290 MB
- Prohibit Send: 300 MB
- Prohibit Receive: 400 MB
