Backing Up Apple Mail E-mails

If you have previously used Apple Mail to POP your e-mail and wish to switch to IMAP, follow the procedure below to avoid losing mail.

  1. Open Mail from the Dock.

  2. Click on the Mailbox tab and choose New Mailbox .
  1. Select "On My Mac" for the location and name your new mailbox archive (or something similar)
  1. Next you need to create subfolders: Hold down the control button, highlight your new mailbox, and select New Mailbox (you will need to create as many new sub-mailboxes as you had folders in your old POP account).

  2. After you created your subfolders, you need to drag your the mail from your old POP folders to your new Archive folders (be sure you move everything you will need)
  3. You can now close this window and return to the IMAP for Apple Mail configuration page.
